On a farm road lined with plastic greenhouses, I started walking again today in my embarrassing outfit, watching my reflection blurry in the transparent film. I sensed someone working inside, and every time I heard the rustling of leaves, my heart would race, worried that I was being watched. Every time I slowly passed by the edge of a field, a glimpse of a figure through a gap in the greenhouse would make my legs go weak. But I just can’t oppose that thrill—I find myself walking deliberately slowly or stopping to pretend I’m doing something. Even when I hear a tractor in the distance, far from running away, I actually want to show off even more. While I worry about what I’d do if someone saw me in a place like this, my desire to “be seen” wins out. Maybe next time I’ll try going inside the greenhouse. Your reaction is what drives my next step. Watch until the very end, and let me become a foreign element in this countryside.
